Change that Works Campaign Overview

On November 4, 2008, we saw a pro-labor President elected to office, plus a pro-labor majority in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.  SEIU knew with this election and all the hard work of our members we should not waste anytime in moving pro-labor legislation.

On January 7, 2009 SEIU members kicked off "Change that Works Campaign” in over 35 states, with the goal of getting the U.S. Congress and President Barack Obama to pass a real economic recovery package, pass comprehensive health care reform and ensure all employees have the freedom to join a union.

The Change that Works campaign scored a huge victory when President Barack Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which released over $787 billion into our struggling economy.  “If we're going to revive the American Dream we have to build an economy that works for everyone," said Service Employees International Union Secretary-Treasurer Anna Burger.

SEIU Local 221’s campaign team reached out to our own membership about the campaign and developed community allies.

Change that Works can only achieve our other priorities when our SEIU members are engaged and active in the campaign. Organizers and member leaders are having one-on-one member meetings, hosting member house meetings, and going into the worksites. If you would like to learn more about the campaign or host a worksite meeting, please contact your Steward or Worksite Organizer.
