SEIU Local 221 has a new format to get news to our members, the Local 221 newsletter. The newsletter was mailed to our members and distributed to worksites around San Diego County.

Questions and Concerns: A note from the President

Dear Members:

 

I have received some comments and concerns about the SEIU Local 221 Newsletter.   The newsletter is a new element of our program at Local 221 and replaces the quarterly President's Letter.  Several members have expressed concerns regarding the cost to create, print, and mail the newsletter, and whether it is made from recyclable materials. 

 

The first half of the newsletter was designed in house by our Communications Specialist.  The second half, iThrive Magazine, was created and paid for by our community partner, National University. The total cost to produce and mail the newsletter is $1.31 per copy. While the newsletter looks expensive, the cost to produce and mail it is approximately the same as the cost to produce and mail the old quarterly President’s Letter. 

 

On an annual basis, approximately 1.5% of the dues revenue received by the Local is used for print communications, ranging from workplace flyers to communications mailed to our members’ homes.  The President’s Letter and SEIU Local 221 Newsletter are included in this budgeted cost.  Print communications reach more of our membership than any other media, including email communications.  Many of our members do not have access to the internet.

 

Our newsletter is printed on recyclable paper with soy-based inks, consistent with our successful recycling programs at the Local.   No COPE or Political Education Funds were used to produce the newsletter.

Local 221 formed its partnership with National University in 2008.  National University is the second-largest private non-profit institution of higher learning in California.  The University has donated the iThrive health magazine to all of our members.  The magazine has been incorporated into our newsletter.
